Mold problems in Northern Nevada homes aren't always the dramatic, visible kind. Our high-desert climate means most mold issues show up quietly, in places you don't look every day. Here's what to watch for.

1. A Musty or Earthy Smell

If a room, closet, or crawl space has a persistent musty odor that doesn't go away with cleaning, that's often the first sign of mold growth behind a wall, under flooring, or in an HVAC system, even before you can see it.

2. Discoloration on Walls, Ceilings, or Grout

Mold isn't always black. It can appear as green, orange, white, or gray patches, especially around bathroom grout, window sills, and areas where condensation collects.

3. Recent Water Intrusion or a Slow Leak

Any area that has had water intrusion, whether from a roof leak, a slow plumbing drip, or irrigation spraying against a foundation, is a candidate for hidden mold growth within 24-48 hours of sustained moisture.

4. Increased Allergy Symptoms at Home

If household members notice more sneezing, congestion, or respiratory irritation while at home that improves elsewhere, indoor air quality, including mold spore levels, is worth investigating.

5. Condensation on Windows or in the Attic

Persistent condensation is a moisture problem waiting to become a mold problem. It's especially common in attics with poor ventilation and in bathrooms without functioning exhaust fans.

When to Get a Professional Mold Test

Visual signs are a starting point, but they don't tell you what's actually in the air or confirm whether a suspicious stain is mold at all. A professional mold and air quality test gives you lab-confirmed results instead of guesswork.

Home Inspection Associates, LLC is IAC2-certified for mold and air quality testing and serves Reno, Sparks, Fernley, Carson City, Fallon, and the surrounding Northern Nevada communities. If you're seeing any of these signs, schedule a mold and air quality test to know what you're actually dealing with.
