Why Well Water Testing Matters in Northern Nevada
Private wells are common throughout rural Northern Nevada — particularly in Fernley, Fallon, Dayton, Yerington, Silver Springs, and surrounding communities. Unlike municipal water supplies that are regularly tested and treated, private well water quality is the responsibility of the property owner. Contamination can occur gradually and may not have any visible signs, taste, or odor until levels become significant.
Common well water concerns in Northern Nevada include naturally occurring minerals such as arsenic, uranium, and nitrates — all of which have been detected at elevated levels in groundwater across Nevada's high desert regions. Agricultural activity in the Fallon and Fernley areas can also contribute to nitrate contamination. Iron and manganese levels are frequently elevated in older wells, and bacteria can enter wells through cracks, improper sealing, or flooding events.
When Well Water Testing Is Recommended
Well water testing is recommended:
• At the time of a real estate transaction involving a private well
• When a new well is drilled or put into service
• After any flood or high-water event near the wellhead
• If you notice changes in taste, odor, or color of your water
• If livestock or agricultural activity occurs near the water source
• Periodically for ongoing health and safety awareness (annually or biannually)
What We Test For
Our well water testing is performed through an accredited laboratory and covers a comprehensive range of contaminants. Standard panels typically include bacteria (coliform and E. coli), nitrates, pH, hardness, iron, manganese, and turbidity. Expanded testing is available for arsenic, uranium, lead, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other parameters based on your location and concerns.
How Testing Works
Water sample collection is straightforward and can be performed as a standalone service or in conjunction with a home inspection. We provide the sample containers and chain-of-custody documentation required for laboratory submission. Results are typically available within 1 to 5 business days depending on the turnaround option selected. We provide context for understanding your results and can help you determine whether any follow-up is appropriate.
