Fernley's Domestic Wells

The "lining of the canal" has created a stir in our community because (like me) we don't know if that measure is going to affect our domestic wells that we get our water from.  Our company has been providing well inspections to Fernley and the surrounding municipalities for years and since I am equipped to do so, I've been checking my well periodically.

I wanted to extend my services to our Fernley community so that you may have a better picture of your domestic well system.

The complete well system inspection

The complete well inspection and subsequent results are very detailed. We use state of the art equipment to measure flow rate, static water level etc. In a "typical" well inspection I provide the following information:

  • Gallons per minute provided by the system

  • Static water level

    • This refers to the level of the water in a well under normal, undisturbed, no-pumping conditions

  • The depth of the well (to the bottom)

  • The pumping water level

    • the pumping water level is the depth at which water is found in the well when a pump is actively extracting water from it. This level can change over time due to various factors, including the rate of pumping, natural recharge of the aquifer, and seasonal variations. It's an important parameter to monitor to ensure sustainable groundwater use.

  • The well recovery rate

    • The well recovery rate for domestic wells refers to the rate at which water is replenished or recovered in a well after it has been pumped or drawn down. In the context of domestic water supply, it is essential to understand the well recovery rate because it determines how quickly the well can provide a sufficient amount of water for household needs, such as drinking, bathing, and other domestic uses.

  • Pump horsepower

  • Pressure switch size

  • Pressure tank size and internal pressure

  • Pressure tank drawdown

  • The amount of Amperes (Amps) that the pump is drawing

The cost of the complete well inspection is $400 and can be scheduled

While our complete well inspection covers every facet of your domestic well system you may not be interested or concerned about such a wide breadth of information. For that reason we have created just a couple of "a la carte" items so that you can schedule what is most important to you. These are also based on what I think are important as a well owner.

Partial Well Inspection #1

  • Static water level, pumping water level, gallons per minute and well recovery rate. If you didn't need the other information from a complete well inspection this would be the next level of information that would serve you well. During this test we will measure the static water level, run the water until the level gets down to the pumping water level, turn off the water and then measure the well recovery rate. The cost of Package #1 is $200 and can be scheduled by clicking here

Partial Well Inspection #2

  • During this test we only check for one metric and that is the static water level. You'll recall that the static water level is the level of the water in a well under normal, undisturbed, no-pumping conditions. This test might best be used as a routine check of what the static water level is and allow you can keep track of that level to see if it's going down, up or staying the same. This test cost $75 and can be schedule here

Water Quality Test

  • Lastly, we can perform a water quality test. During this test we take a water sample and then take that water sample to laboratory in Reno for testing. We get these very detailed reports back in about 5 complete working days. The cost of this test is $250 when combined with any other well test (complete, partial #1 or partial #2) or $350 if this is all we are doing for you. This can be scheduled here.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: What type of equipment do you use?
A: We use digital water meters, ultrasonic well sounders, digital multimeters and a digital megger as well as common hand tools.

  • Q: Do you have any affiliation with the city?
A: No we don't. I have reached out to the Mayor and all city council members about my services. I am merely offering these services because I have all of the equipment, am certified to do it, and with all of the chatter in the community about domestic well problems I thought that this would be a valuable service for our community.

  • Q: What do we need to do to prepare for a well inspection?
A: For the best results water should not have been used to a great extend for ten minutes before the test and during the whole test. This will give us better data about the well.

  • Q: Are you licensed, insured and certified?
A: Since forming our company in 2007 we have all state and local business licenses for the areas that we work in, we have two state certified home inspectors on staff, and our well inspector is certified through the National Association of Home Inspectors and performs inspections to those standards.

  • Q: How soon will we get the report after a well inspection?
A: You will get the well report emailed to you the same day.
